Michael Jordan

September 24th, 2008

It would be incredibly difficult to find someone of any cognitive age who doesn’t know who Michael Jordan happens to be. The man has proven himself to be an idol and an icon to so many different areas of life. Just his name alone symbolizes success and some level of power. You’ll hear arguments about who really is the best basketball player of all time, but no matter who you will vote for, you’ll have to admit that Michael Jordan was one of very best things that ever happened to the world of professional basketball. Gone are the days of the exciting Chicago Bulls games. Gone are the days of watching the infamous Michael Jordan slam dunk yet another ball. However, the days of reminiscing about his greatness will last for years and years to come.

I will never, ever forget watching the Olympics in the summer of 1992. It was the first time that professional basketball players were allowed to even compete in the Olympics. Thus, the original Dream Team was formed, probably the greatest ever formulated, and Michael Jordan carried the American team to an undefeated gold medal. The excitement from those games was simply powerful. I highly doubt that anyone has ever cheered for another Olympics basketball team as much as they cheered in 1992. His popularity simply continued to grow after that accomplishment.

YMCA Camps

September 24th, 2008

In the town I grew up in, YMCA camps are really very popular. You see, parents around town did not have a lot of money to send their kids out of town to expensive wilderness summer camps, but at the same time they wanted to give their children an opportunity to get fit and enjoy the summer the way all kids like to – by running around, swimming, playing sports, and generally goofing off. YMCA summer camp gave us the opportunity to do just that.

The first year I ever went to YMCA camp, I was entering fifth grade and dreading the experience. I did not want to have to be away from home every day. I really liked to read, and wanted to spend my summer curled up with a book. Nevertheless, my parents wanted me to get in shape, so they sent me away to the day camp.

YMCA camps had not been much of a tradition in my family. My older sister had really liked going to girl scout camp herself, and my big brother had been a boy scout. The reason I went to YMCA camp was because it was close and convenient, and did not require me to sleep away. I would spend the day there and then my parents would pick me up.

Summer Day Camps

September 24th, 2008

When I was first married, I never anticipated sending my children to all day summer camps. I figured I would take advantage of the summer as a time to bond as a family and enjoy educational activities together. Nonetheless, the realities of working in the real world hadn’t really occurred to me. The thing is that an active child needs constant stimulation, and not every parent can provide it. Children should be able to swim, bike, run around, and have fun in the summer. They should also keep learning. This is what summer day camps are all about.

Last year, I sent my eldest child Jenny to a summer science camp. It wasn’t at all like the summer day camps that were around when I was growing up. Instead of emphasizing craft projects and swimming in swimming pools, it was mostly geared towards kids who wanted to explore nature from a technical perspective. We live in a pretty urbanized area, but there are some great wilderness hikes not far from town. Kids in the summer day camp would get to look at petroglyphs, watch different birds and learn about the native plants and animals, and even get some environmental education.

Personalized Bowling Shirts

September 24th, 2008

Bowlers are often compared (unfairly, in my opinion) to golfers in terms of their lack of fashion sense. While I can understand how some people might not be fond of polyester bowling shirts, I don’t think they’re nearly as bad as some of the outrageous outfits I’ve seen on the golf course. At least bowlers don’t go around wearing plaid pants that look like they were picked out by my colorblind grandmother!

Well, since I’m a bowler myself, I admit to being a bit biased here — especially since I’ve been in charge of ordering my team’s bowling shirts for the past five years. I always try to get something different each year, and I make sure that I order classic designs that would look good both on and off the lanes. Plus, I’ve been trying to purchase my bowling shirts from different online vendors so I can get a better idea of which websites offer the best quality products at the lowest prices.

Do You Have A Bike Lock

September 24th, 2008

I never rode my bike to school when I was younger, but this was something my brother did almost every single day. I guess more boys like the idea of riding to school, as they don’t seem as concerned about getting dirty as girls might as they get older. We lived in a small town, so bikes were always welcome. However, any student who rode their bike to school had to have a bike lock on it just to keep it safe.

It is still a good idea to have a bike lock, now more so than ever. Even if you have your bike on a porch in a relatively safe neighborhood, you still have to be concerned with theft. It is not usually hardened criminals that want a bike, it’s usually teenagers messing around. That doesn’t mean a bike lock is not needed. Those who take them to mess around may not end up returning them, or they may break them. Having a bike lock keeps the bike where it belongs.

Martial arts training is an excellent investment in your kid’s future

September 24th, 2008

Bruce Lee, the world famous martial artist, was perhaps the single biggest influence in the resurgence of interest in the martial arts. Kids responded to the prowess of Mr. Lee, popularized on the big screen, in a big way. Today, martial arts training is part of the mainstream sports scene. You can find martial arts classes, offered in almost every town, all across America.

We all know that kids aren’t getting enough exercise and this is reflected in rising rates of overweight and obese children. How can you pry them away from sedentary activities? Enrolling your kids in a martial arts training program is one excellent solution.

You won’t have much trouble getting an enthusiastic response from your kids. The martial arts evoke images of powerful, agile superstars with almost magical abilities. There’s a certain romance to martial artists akin to the knights of old, television’s Zorro and the Three Musketeers.

Sports Training For Kids

September 24th, 2008

Those that excel in sports do so for two very important reasons. They have a the natural talent for a sport that they love, and they put in the extra work to be sure that they are the best that they can be. Though youngsters just play to play, those that stick with a sport as they move in into high school often become interested in sports training that can make them the best that they can be. Some schools help with this, but parents can make sure they are doing the right things and being safe about it as well.

Running drills is important, but can be done off practice time at home. That means parents should help with these, but should not push them if the child is not interested. There is a line between dedication and obsession, and every teenager should have a very well rounded life rather than focusing just on one thing. When it comes to sports training, talk with them to see if there is something they would like to do at home, with you, and if not, let it go. Just knowing that you want to help will encourage them to ask you when they feel that they may want to work on some sports training on their own.

Ice skates

September 20th, 2008

My grandparents had a small pond on their farm, and an odd collection of ice skates. I always thought it would be fun to learn to how to skate, but I never got the hang of it. I later learned to roller skate, but for some reason, I could never handle the skates built for sliding across the ice. However, I think I am going to have to learn soon enough, because my daughter’s school has a few outings to the local rink each year, and I want to be able to go with her.

Learning to deal with ice skates at my age might be fun, but I fear I am going to break something. I’m not that old of course, but I am not a teenager either. Learning things like standing on ice skates is always easier when you are a child or a teen because you have almost no fear. That changes when you grow older, and you begin to realize how frail the human body can be. Those thoughts are going to be racing through my mind as I think about how to get up on those skates to go out on the ice with my little girl.

Finding the Best Rock Climbing Equipment

September 20th, 2008

Rocky Mountain adventure lovers can’t resist scaling at least a few of those peaks. I learned the sport in Boulder, and quickly became hooked on the adrenaline rush, physical challenge, and the amazing views I was treated to when I reached my destination. Rock climbing equipment was important, since high quality gear made climbs both safer and more enjoyable. There were a lot of supplies available, but I quickly learned that each piece had its own purpose and I began collecting more gear as I gained experience and expertise.

Shoes are one of the first pieces of rock climbing equipment to shop for, since the right shoes will allow you to scale a variety of surfaces much more easily. The stiff soles on these shoes will successfully protect the feet from sharp, jagged rocks and provide the necessary friction for more effective work. The shoes usually fit rather tightly, even uncomfortably, but the snug fit gives you the control necessary for the sport.
